Understanding how they work
Steroids for body building are known as anabolic androgenic steroids. Here’s why:
Anabolic
Steroids stimulate and thus increase your muscles’ capacity to:
They also allow a better supply of oxygen to muscles by increasing the quantity of red blood cells in you bloodstream which means you can work harder for longer during training. In short, they make muscle building a more efficient process.
Androgenic
Anabolic Steroids are synthetic versions of the male sex hormone, testosterone (the thing that makes men look masculine). Your balls (testicles) do this naturally, so when you take steroids you’re adding a chemical top-up to your body. This can result in an initial increase in sex drive until your body adjusts by producing less of its own to compensate.
Generally, it’s the androgenic qualities of steroids which cause most of the side effects. It follows that most people use them for their anabolic (bulking) qualities.
All anabolic steroids have these effects in varying ratios.
They won’t work properly if the diet and workout aren’t right
For steroids to give their desired effects, a good diet and exercise regime are crucial.
An ideal diet when on steroids is made up of a 60% carbohydrates, 20% protein and 20% fats. Good sources of carbohydrates include rice, pasta and potato. Protein is best derived from white meats like chicken and turkey, rather than red meats. Fish such as tuna and cod are good sources too. Vegetarian sources include soya products, mycroprotein and beans.
It’s worth checking the labels on foods for their dietary content. Be careful with fats: try to avoid saturated fats because they’re bad for your heart. Poly-and mono-unsaturated fats are healthier.
You should also drink 3 litres/5 pints of water when taking steroids (particularly orals).
In terms of both diet and workout plan, ideally, you should consult a nutritionist, dietician or qualified trainer. Some people find having a workout partner helps keep their workout challenging.
